Admissions Process
At Smith Preparatory Academy, we believe education is a partnership, working together toward the formation of young men and women who love what is true, good, and beautiful and who seek to live faithfully before God.
Choosing a school is about much more than selecting classes, curriculum, or activities. It is choosing a community that will help shape the mind, character, habits, and loves of your child.
Our enrollment process is designed to help families get to know Smith Prep while allowing us to get to know your family and your student. Our goal is not simply to determine whether a student can succeed academically, but whether Smith Prep and the family can enter into a healthy partnership centered upon our Christian faith, classical philosophy of education, and shared commitment to cultivating wisdom and virtue.
Step 1: Visit Smith Prep
While visiting the school is not required to apply, it is encouraged. One of the best ways to understand Smith Preparatory Academy is to experience our community in person.
We invite prospective families to schedule a campus visit, meet members of our faculty and administration, observe our classrooms, and learn more about our classical Christian approach to education. During your visit, we will introduce you to the distinctive culture of Smith Prep and answer questions about our academics and our school community.
We encourage families to use this visit not simply to ask, “Is this a good school?” but also, “Is this the kind of education and community we desire for our children?”
Step 2: Submit an Application
After visiting Smith Prep and determining that you would like to continue the admissions process, families may submit an application for enrollment.
The application allows us to learn more about your student, your family, your educational history, and your reasons for pursuing a classical Christian education. Families should carefully review Smith Prep’s Statement of Faith, philosophy of education, family expectations, and relevant school policies before applying.
As part of the application process, families may be asked to provide appropriate records such as:
- Previous school records or transcripts
- Recent report cards
- Standardized testing, when available
- Academic or educational evaluations, when applicable
- Relevant student records
- Additional information requested by the Admissions Office
Submitting an application begins the formal admissions process but does not constitute acceptance or guarantee enrollment.
Step 3: Student Assessment
Once an application has been reviewed, prospective students will participate in an age-appropriate academic assessment.
The purpose of the assessment is not simply to determine whether a student can “pass” an entrance examination. Rather, we want to understand the student’s current academic development and determine the grade level, courses, resources, and support that will provide the best opportunity for the student to flourish at Smith Prep.
Because students come from many different educational backgrounds, placement decisions consider the whole student, not merely a single test score.
Step 4: Family Interview
Following the application and assessment, prospective families may be invited to meet with members of the Smith Prep administration.
The family interview is one of the most important parts of our admissions process. Smith Prep is not simply enrolling individual students; we are entering into a partnership with families.
During this conversation, we will discuss Smith Prep’s mission, Christian commitments, philosophy of education, expectations for students and parents, and the family’s educational goals. It is also an opportunity for parents to ask questions and for us to determine whether there is sufficient alignment for a healthy and fruitful partnership.
For older students, the student may also participate in the interview. We want Upper School students in particular to understand the expectations of a Smith Prep education and to be prepared to participate faithfully in the academic, spiritual, and communal life of the school.
Step 5: Admission Decision & Enrollment
After the application, assessment, records review, and family interview have been completed, the Admissions Committee will review the student’s application.
Families will then receive an admission decision. A student may be:
- Accepted — The student is offered enrollment at Smith Preparatory Academy.
- Accepted with Academic Recommendations or Conditions — The student may enroll with specific placement, tutoring, academic support, behavioral, or other requirements designed to help the student succeed.
- Waitlisted — The student is considered a good candidate for Smith Prep, but placement is dependent upon available space.
- Not Accepted — After careful consideration, the school determines that Smith Prep is not presently the appropriate educational placement or partnership for the student or family.
Families receiving an offer of admission will be given instructions for completing enrollment, submitting required forms, establishing tuition arrangements, and preparing for the beginning of school.
Enrollment is complete only when all required enrollment documents and financial arrangements have been finalized.
Our desire is to partner with families who:
- Affirm and support the Christian mission and identity of Smith Preparatory Academy.
- Understand and value classical Christian education.
- Desire the formation of wisdom, virtue, rightly ordered loves, and not academic achievement alone.
- Recognize parents as the primary educators of their children and desire a genuine partnership with the school.
- Support the authority and expectations of Smith Prep’s faculty and administration.
- Value participation in a community where students and families learn, serve, celebrate, and grow together.
